Five top travel destinations for 2021
by Julie-Ann Sherlock
COVID-19 may still be putting a major dent in our travel plans, but with hope in the shape of the vaccine on the horizon, now is a natural time to start thinking about a future holiday (when it's safe to embark on one). To protect yourself and others both at home and in your destination, it makes sense to choose locations with a strong focus on health and safety. With that in mind, here's a list of contenders for travel in 2021.
New Zealand
Although their borders aren't yet open to tourists, New Zealand will be one of the safest places to travel when they do allow us to visit. With wide open spaces amidst some of the world's most glorious scenery, a camping trip in the wilds of the North or South Islands will help recharge your pandemic-drained batteries.
Portugal
Portugal offers sunshine, stunning beaches and quaint, laid-back towns and villages and is one of the least COVID-19-affected countries in Europe. By avoiding the bigger urban centres, you can keep your distance while still absorbing the culture and enjoying the relaxed lifestyle.
Vietnam
Most Southeast Asian countries have had remarkable success in containing the virus, making them a safe travel option; Vietnam is amongst the safest. While its borders are still closed, they look likely to reopen if the new variant is brought under control globally. Find a sense of bliss on the tranquil island of Phu Quoc or in the jungles of the mainland.
Cuba
With consistently low virus numbers and a good healthcare system, Cuba is an option for those wanting a taste of the Caribbean way of life. Atmospheric nights in Havana or adventure days in Baracoa are still possible, as long as precautions are taken. So get your fix of sun-soaked culture while you can.
Zambia
Watch the legendary sunset over the Victoria Falls or look out for elephants on their morning stroll at the Kafue National Park as the sun rises. Getting back to nature in one of Africa's most unspoiled and safest countries is easy with so much wildlife and beauty to explore.
International travel restrictions and testing requirements are changing almost daily, so make sure you access the latest information on your chosen destination before you book. When it's safe to do so, relax and enjoy one of humankind's greatest freedoms — travel.
