Best known as Howard Hamlin in Netflix sensation Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian shares his thoughts on the value of perseverance and gives advice to aspiring actors.
I like to say that I’m part of a group of guys who grew up thinking they were going to be Brad Pitt or George Clooney. It turns out those roles were already taken. So when you look back in your forties and realise you’re a working actor, it’s amazing. I jobbed around for years: it feels like I’ve been on almost every TV show, from Xena: Warrior Princess to Murder, She Wrote.
When it came to auditioning for Better Call Saul, I figured they could have anybody they wanted. I didn’t think I had a shot at all. But in auditions, directors and producers always have a question they need answered. I was lucky in that I happened to be the answer.
I know that in this day and age, it seems like all you need to be famous is a YouTube channel but that’s not why I got into acting. I love it for the craft of acting, which I really enjoy. And that craft is a learned trade. So take an acting class. Because that’s the work—that’s the stuff you’ll be doing again and again.
