Readability is critical to communicating your message to your audience.

However, between mastering accessibility standards and writing skills, it can be a bit difficult to produce consistent, readable content. Luckily, there are seven apps that can help you review and improve the readability of your website. Using these apps is not only a great way to ensure readability, but they can help you build your skill sets.

1. Grammarly

Grammarly is a comprehensive content checker. Not only will it check spelling and grammar, but will help detect plagiarism. The basic check is free of charge, but the full program is around £20.

2. Hemingway Editor

Taking a cue from the famously laconic author, Hemingway Editor recommends ways to streamline your content. The app reviews your writing and makes suggested on how to remove excess wordiness.

3. Contrast Ratio

It is very important for website accessibility. W3C recommends a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (W3C). Simply enter your text and background colours and you can see if your text is accessible.

4. Tone Analyzer

If you’ve ever received an email an unintentionally rude or abrupt email, you understand that tone is very important. Tone Analyzer will help review your text to see what kinds of emotional reactions your wording invokes. Simply enter the text and edit to get the response you’re after.

5. Cliche Finder

Cliches are boring and often a sign of lazy writing. This checker can quickly review your writing to see if you’re overusing cliches.

6. Screenfly

Screenfly is another great tool for accessibility. You can view your content on any size or type of screen imaginable to make sure it’s readable no matter what platform it is on.

7. Readability Test Tool

The Readability Test Tool is the ultimate app for testing readability. It analyses everything from grade level to frequency of verb, adjectives, and nouns to average reading time.

Apps can be very helpful, however, to really master readability you need a critical human eye. At ALHAUS, our content editors will review your content for readability, but will also help make sure it is reaching your ideal audience. Check out our services to learn about all the ways we can help you!
