Building a better online world

In a sea of online content, it’s hard to know where to go for credible LGBTQ+ content and resources. Ellen Sheward introduces three YouTube channels — with thousands of supporters all over the world — that are paving the way toward a more enlightened, educated future.

Powered By Rainbows

Powered By Rainbows (PBR) is a weekly YouTube series offering lighthearted educational content and hosted by executive producer Matt Haslam (or “Professor Pride” as he’s often called). With over 95,000 subscribers and viewers in more than 50 countries, the goal is to make learning about the LGBTQ+ community fun and interactive for all ages, genders, and sexual orientations. PBR tackles important LGBTQ+ issues in a playful and accessible way—through episodes like the “Gender-Bread Person Classroom Lesson” and “100 LGBTQ Terms You Should Know”. Created by a dedicated team of researchers, writers, producers, hosts, and editors, PBR has been a trusted source of LGBTQ+ information for over five years.

My Genderation

The My Genderation YouTube channel was founded in 2013 by documentary film-makers Fox Fisher and Lewis Hancox to celebrate trans lives and trans experiences. Feeling frustrated that their experiences weren’t portrayed authentically, the duo began creating films about the trans people around them—determined to represent trans people authentically and truthfully. In recent years, Owl Fisher has also joined the team to create hundreds of unique videos, designed to spread the message that “Trans Lives Matter”. Since then My Genderation has produced over 100 films, including Channel 4’s My Trans Story and BBC’s New Genderation, as well as campaigns for Stonewall UK, I Want Prep Now, cliniQ and more.

The Los Angeles LGBT Center

The Los Angeles LGBT Center is one of the largest LGBTQ+ organisations in the world and has celebrated and championed the LGBTQ+ communities of LA and beyond since 1969. They provide services for more LGBTQ+ people than any other global organisation and their YouTube channel bears witness to their ambitious ethos: “We are an unstoppable force in the fight against bigotry and the struggle to build a better world in which everyone can be healthy, equal, and complete members of society.” Watch the “Dare to be the Best You” series and more for inspiring perspectives and supportive resources.
